Course Description
Communicating Effectively with Kindness is an 8-week course combining practices of Mindfulness with the Non-Violent Communication principles developed by psychologist Marshall Rosenberg, Ph.D. Rosenberg was a pioneer in teaching people who were in conflict across the globe how to resolve them peacefully.
Like all of the mindfulness classes, this class is also experiential. You can learn skillful ways to speak, but if you do not practice them, they do not become habits of speaking.
Class One focuses on developing your intention for a conversation, as well as cultivating more presence and attention.
In Class Two, you will learn to identify and express your feelings and needs more effectively.
Class Three helps you to hear the feelings and needs of others while in conversation. Assumptions, evaluations and judgments cause confusion and defensiveness in the other party.
In Class Four, you will learn to make indisputable observations which create a common point of reference for discussion to avoid these mishaps.
Class Five focuses on Empathic Listening and Speaking.
In Class Six, you will learn to make clear, doable requests asking
for “buy-in” from the other party.
The seventh class provides training on learning to say “no” when you have conflicting needs, as well as learning to hear “no” and not let it stop the discussion.
The final class involves dealing with triggering thoughts and statements.

Other Items to Note:
(Applies to both our Zoom online classes and the in-person classes at our studio)
Come as you are, and be comfortable. Some of our students may be in business attire, and others in workout clothes.
Class is experiential and includes some teaching, as well as practices with discussion. No one is pressured to speak.
We recommend that you arrive 5 minutes before class starts. If you are going to arrive late, that it is fine, but it is best to be on time to be respectful of the group. We understand, however, that things can happen beyond your control and we would rather have you come late than not at all.
If you will miss your class, please inform the instructor. You may make up the class the next time the series is offered; or you may take the entire next series again for free. Alternatively, you can pay for a private make-up session.
You are allowed to bring food and beverages. We do offer water, tea, and coffee at our studio.
There is no need to take notes. Our instructors will provide summaries of each class as handouts (or sent via email).
