Cultivating Happiness & Peace

$300.00

This 6-week class provides an introduction to the qualities we cultivate through mindfulness which increase our overall sense of well-being, including equanimity, gratitude, appreciative joy, generosity, loving-kindness, and compassion.  All of these teachings are found in the world’s great wisdom traditions and these practices are in accord with those teachings, but presented in a secular format.

In order to truly cultivate these qualities, we must first become aware.  Mindfulness provides specific ways to develop our minds and hearts in these qualities.

All classes are currently delivered through Zoom, an online meeting tool. When in person classes become a safe possibility, we may move to in-person class delivery in our Houston studio. At that point, students will have the choice to join each class in-person or through Zoom.

Key Takeaways

  • Be able to use tools to increase equanimity during difficult times.
  • Develop more loving kindness and compassion.
  • Have a tool to let go of envy and jealousy.
  • Become more authentically generous.
  • Find more gratitude in your day.

Course Description

The first class begins with a discussion and practice of Equanimity, helping you to develop an evenness or stability during times of stress.  Equanimity is not mentioned or modeled very much in our culture, yet it is a powerful skill to develop.

Class Two focuses on Loving Kindness Practices.  Many wisdom traditions tell you to “love your neighbor as yourself,” yet there is little guidance on how to cultivate those feelings for ourselves and for people who are challenging.  This class can help you develop a desire to send good thoughts for everyone’s needs to be met.

Class Three introduces Compassion Practice, which can be very soothing and comforting when you or someone else is suffering.

Class Four focuses on Generosity.  We examine when we give, why we give, and where it feels truly generous and where it feels obligatory, causing resentment or frustration.

Class Five focuses on Appreciative Joy, or feeling joy for someone else’s success and happiness.  It is an antidote to envy and jealousy.  Class Six introduces practices to increase awareness of all the gifts in your world, cultivating more Gratitude.

Typical Class Structure:

  • Teaching and Information sharing – we will review the concepts with discussion.
  • Experiential practices– each week’s guided practice is seated.

Other Items to Note:

(Applies to both our Zoom online classes and the in-person classes at our studio).

Come as you are, and be comfortable. Some of our students may be in business attire, and others in workout clothes.

Class is experiential and includes some teaching, as well as practices with discussion. No one is pressured to speak.

We recommend that you arrive 5 minutes before class starts. If you are going to arrive late, that is fine, but it is best to be on time to be respectful of the group. We understand that sometimes things happen beyond your control; however, and we would rather have you come late than not at all.

If you miss a class, you can make up that session the next time the series is offered or you can take the entire series again for free.  Alternatively, you can pay to have a private make-up session.

You are allowed to bring food and beverages. We do offer water, tea, and coffee at our studio.

There is no need to take notes. Our instructors will provide summaries of each class as handouts (or sent via email).
