Deepening Kindness & Compassion

$360.00

Our society, as others, often tells us to “be nice.” When you learn to wear the mask of niceness, it feels inauthentic, separates you from others, and causes you to overextend yourself in ways that can cause resentment.  How can you learn to be kind to yourself and others instead?

The world’s wisdom traditions emphasize loving ourselves and others, which often feels easier said than done. During this 6-week class, you will learn practices to stop judging yourself and others and to deepen your loving kindness and compassion.

All classes are currently delivered through Zoom, an online meeting tool. When in person classes become a safe possibility, we may move to in-person class delivery in our Houston studio. At that point, students will have the choice to join each class in-person or through Zoom.

Course Description

Sometimes you are nice and sometimes, kind.  That is true of all of us.  The first two classes begin with a discussion of the difference between “niceness” and “kindness,” allowing you to examine differences in times when you have been nice and times you were kind. While in no way judging yourself, you become more aware through this process.  How did you feel?  What were you believing?  How do you think others felt?  What happened in those relationships?  You will also learn about scientific research on the benefits of kindness.

The third class focuses on the kind act of setting intentions and identifying actions which can help you to better meet your intentions.

Class Four distinguishes between practices of loving kindness and compassion, noticing how each practice feels in the body.

Class Five engages in discussion of your thoughts of unworthiness or shame, and how you might bring more self-compassion to those moments.

Class Six also focuses on building self-compassion for yourself and others through forgiveness.

This class raises awareness, as do the other classes.  It is not intended to set up a duality of nice vs. kind, causing you to judge yourself more harshly; rather to notice what your experiences are when you are acting from one place or another.

Participation in this class requires you to go deep within your experience.  It requires self-reflection, self-honesty, and participation in the group discussions.  However, you always have the choice whether or not to participate in any specific discussion.

Typical Class Structure:

  • Teaching and Information sharing – Class includes teaching and discussion of weekly worksheets.  Participation is important.
  • Experiential meditation practices – All classes begin with a grounding meditation.
