This 6-week class delves into ways to be more present with our children and to let go of stress while interacting with family. Discussions topics with written exercises will help you become more aware of your parenting habits and intentions.  Topics include: connecting with yourself, learning to accept yourself and your child(ren), letting go of expectations, finding blessings in imperfection, disciplining mindfully, being with emotional pain, and communicating more mindfully.

All classes are currently delivered through Zoom, an online meeting tool. When in person classes become a safe possibility, we may move to in-person class delivery in our Houston studio. At that point, students will have the choice to join each class in-person or through Zoom.

Course Description

Parenting is not easy for anyone. Each child is different; and no child comes into this world with a manual!  This class is not meant to provide fast solutions to problems; rather to teach you a different way of being with issues to support more kind communication and interaction.

In Class One, you will learn to notice when you are reactive and to learn how to identify signs that can stop the reactivity by bringing more calm, curious awareness to the situation.

Class Two focuses on reconnecting with your body for stress reduction and bringing more acceptance to yourself and your family.

In Class Three, we will talk about how we can learn to be with strong emotions and teach our children to do so.

Class Four focuses on identifying parenting patterns and beliefs that are not working for you or your children.

In Class Five, you will learn how to identify your needs and your child’s needs in any situation and how it can help you see mutually beneficial strategies.

Class Six continues with discussion of needs and how to communicate more mindfully in setting limits and being with conflict.

Because so many intense topics are addressed in this class, such as communication and discipline, you might find that you want to take a follow-up class or an individual session. The Mindfulness Essentials class can help you to develop your own mindfulness skills and Mindful Communication can provide more in depth practice for skillful interactions.

Typical Class Structure:

  • Teaching and Information sharing – Information on parenting will be shared during each session, along with worksheets for discussion.
  • Experiential practices – Classes begin with a brief mindfulness practice (meditation); worksheets are discussed in group; and the class sometimes allows for dyads (two people practicing interaction).
